The what and the how
by sandra b.
The workshop is the only old part of the house that was left. The reason why it was not teared down is that we used the space as a provisional shelter. The old house had 60m2 room used partially as a garage, and partially as a workshop. We renovated the room with the purpose of saving money by stopping paying rent. It also served as a the test to know if we were capable of building anything. The staying in this provisional place supposed to last only 2 month. We ended living 4 years in it. So I'm happy we actually did the effort of renovating for leaving.
We bought the house end 2019. We started renovating in 2020. We found all kinds of garbage and poison in the walls, floor, etc., we had to cover everything up. Buying the materials became very difficult because Covid hit. So it took longer to renovate.
This is how the workshop and technical room used to look like:
The room did not have toilets, windows were small and super old, walls were not straight and the paint used was poisonous. So we decided to build a new toilet, make it fire proof (for future use as a workshop), level the walls and cover the poisonous painting, add a little kitchen and a stove. We divided the room and created 2 rooms.
Here is how it looked like:
